Jundiaí's Story and Location
The first non-native settlers in the Jundiaí area were Rafael de Oliveira and Petronilha Rodrigues Antunes. They arrived around 1615. They started a community that later became known as the Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Desterro.
The city was officially founded on December 14, 1655. It was first organized in 1657. Jundiaí shares its borders with several other cities. These include Várzea Paulista, Campo Limpo Paulista, and Itupeva.
The name Jundiaí comes from the Tupi language. Jundiá means "fish with barbs," referring to a type of catfish. Í means river. So, Jundiaí roughly translates to "Catfish River."
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many Italian immigrants came to Jundiaí. Today, about 75% of the city's people have Italian roots. Other groups like Portuguese, Spanish, and German people also settled here.
Recently, Jundiaí has grown a lot. Many people have moved from the big city of São Paulo. They come looking for a better quality of life.
Grape and Strawberry Farming
Jundiaí became famous for growing grapes. Especially popular is the "pink" Niagara grape variety. To help grape farming, the city started the Festa da Uva (Grape Festival) in 1934. This festival is held every two years.
The Festa da Uva takes place at the Parque Comendador Antonio Carbonari. This park is also known as the Parque da Uva (Grape Park). In the years when the Grape Festival is not held, the city celebrates the Festa do Morango (Strawberry Festival).
The first Strawberry Festival was in 1965. It started in a neighborhood called Poste. As more people joined and visited, the festival moved to the larger Parque Comendador Antonio Carbonari.
