Dame June Clark was born on May 31, 1941. She is a very respected nurse and a retired professor of community nursing at Swansea University in Wales. Being a "Professor Emeritus" means she is a retired professor who still keeps her title because of her important work.

June Clark's Career in Nursing

Before she retired in 2003, June Clark led important research at Swansea University. Her work focused on community health nursing and basic healthcare for everyone. She was especially interested in creating clear, standard ways to describe how nurses work. This helped make sure nursing care was consistent and well-understood.

In 1990, she left the National Health Service (NHS) to work in higher education. She became a Professor of Nursing and started a new School of Nursing at Middlesex University. In 1997, she moved back to Wales. She became the first professor of nursing at Swansea University.

Working with Nurses Worldwide

During the 1990s, June Clark helped the International Council of Nurses (ICN). She worked on a project to create an International Classification of Nursing Practice (ICNP). This system helps nurses around the world use the same language to describe their work.

She is also a leader in the Welsh Nursing Academy. June Clark first became a nurse at University College Hospital in London. Before that, she earned a degree in Classics from the University of London.

She worked as a health visitor, helping people in their homes and communities. She stayed in community nursing for almost 40 years. She was a manager, a professor, and a strong supporter for nurses. She earned her master's degree in 1972 and her PhD in 1985.

International Nursing Efforts

June Clark was very involved in nursing around the world. After the Soviet Union broke apart, she helped nurses in Kazakhstan and Romania. She taught them how to become leaders in their field. She is also a visiting professor at the University of Primorska in Slovenia.

She often speaks at big meetings for nurses in different countries. She has also worked with the WHO (World Health Organization) and the ICN. She has represented the UK on important committees for nursing in Europe. In 2001, she gave a special speech in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

June Clark is an active member of Sigma Theta Tau International, a nursing honor society. She helped start the first chapter of this group in Wales. This was only the third chapter in all of Europe. She was also on their board from 2009 to 2011.

She has been involved with the RCN since she was a student. The RCN is a big organization for nurses in the UK. She held many important roles there, including being its president from 1990 to 1994.

June Clark's Legacy

  • The June Clark Travel Scholarship Trust is a scholarship named after her. It helps nurses travel to learn new things.

Awards and Honours

In 1995, June Clark was given a very high honour. She was named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). This award was for her great work and service to nursing.

She was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing in 1982. This means she was recognized as a top leader in nursing.

In 1996, she received the RCN Award of Merit. In 2012, she was also chosen as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.
