College Basketball Career
Justin Patton spent his first year at Creighton in 2015 as a redshirt player. This meant he practiced with the team but did not play in games. His coach, Greg McDermott, decided this for a few reasons. Justin was young for a college freshman and needed more time to improve his skills. He also would have played very little because Creighton had another tall player, Geoff Groselle. Coach McDermott believed Justin needed to learn how to compete at a high level. He also wanted Justin to understand the importance of a healthy diet and getting enough sleep.
In his first college game in 2016, Justin scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. He scored his highest points in a game, 25, against St. John's on January 4, 2017. He had an amazing streak of 13 games where he scored double-digit points. This streak ended in a game against Xavier on February 4, 2017. During his first year, he was named the Big East Freshman of the Year. He also made the Second Team All-Big East. On April 5, 2017, Justin decided to leave college early to enter the NBA draft. He signed with an agent, which meant he could no longer play college basketball.
Professional Basketball Journey
Playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves (2017–2018)
The Chicago Bulls picked Justin Patton as the 16th player in the 2017 NBA draft. However, on the same night, his rights were traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. This trade involved Justin and Jimmy Butler going to the Timberwolves. In return, the Bulls received Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn, and the draft rights to Lauri Markkanen.
On July 4, 2017, Justin officially signed with the Timberwolves. He was supposed to play in the 2017 NBA Summer League. But he got hurt during a practice and needed surgery on his left foot. This injury kept him from playing for a long time. Justin finally made his NBA debut on April 1, 2018, against the Utah Jazz. He scored two points and made one steal in his only game with the Timberwolves that season.
He stayed with the team for the rest of their season. On April 18, 2018, Justin had another surgery on his left foot to help it heal better. The team announced he would be out indefinitely again. Justin spent most of his first year playing for the Iowa Wolves, which is a G League team. He started in 38 games, averaging 12.7 points and 5.4 rebounds in about 23 minutes per game. When he first joined Creighton, he was known as a strong defensive player. He is very good at running towards the basket and finishing plays.
