Jutta Lampe (born December 13, 1937 – died December 3, 2020) was a famous German actress. She performed on stage and in movies. For 30 years, she was a main actress at the Schaubühne theater in Berlin. Her husband, Peter Stein, founded this theater.
Jutta Lampe played many different roles. These included classic plays like Alkmene in Kleist's Amphitryon. She also performed in new plays, such as Robert Wilson's Orlando. This play had only one actor, which was her! She also acted in plays written just for her by Botho Strauß. Later, she worked at the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Schauspielhaus Zürich. She appeared in over twenty films, often in lead roles for director Margarethe von Trotta. Jutta Lampe won "Actress of the Year" several times. She also received the Gertrud-Eysoldt-Ring and the Joana Maria Gorvin Prize for her amazing career.

Jutta Lampe's Life and Acting Career
Jutta Lampe was born in Flensburg, Germany. She first appeared on stage when she was just eight years old, performing in ballet. She trained to be an actress in Hamburg in 1956. Her first acting jobs were at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden and then the Nationaltheater Mannheim.
Early Success in Bremen
In the 1960s, Jutta Lampe became very successful at the Theater Bremen. There, she worked with important directors like Peter Zadek and Peter Stein. She played Lady Milford in Schiller's Kabale und Liebe. In this play, she acted alongside famous actors Bruno Ganz and Edith Clever. She also performed in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure and Goethe's Torquato Tasso.
Becoming a Star at Schaubühne
In 1970, Peter Stein started the Schaubühne theater in Berlin. Jutta Lampe was one of the first main actresses to join the group. She always saw herself as part of a team. She worked at the Schaubühne for 30 years.
She played Athene in Stein's production of Orestie. In 1982, she played Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet. She also played Alkmene in Kleist's Amphitryon in 1991. Jutta Lampe performed in many plays by Botho Strauß. Strauss had seen her act early in her career.
One of her most special roles was in Robert Wilson's play Orlando. This play was based on a novel by Virginia Woolf. Jutta Lampe was the only actor in the play. She played many different characters, changing gender and time periods as she traveled through history.
Later Career and Final Roles
From 2001 to 2002, Jutta Lampe was part of the Burgtheater in Vienna. There, she played Arkadina in Chekhov's Die Möwe. She also played Winnie in Beckett's Glückliche Tage. She performed in Berlin one more time in 2005. This was in a play for two women called Die eine und die andere, written by Botho Strauß.
From 2005 to 2008, she worked at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. One of her last stage roles was in 2009. She played Mrs. Baines in Shaw's Major Barbara. This was also director Peter Zadek's last play.
Jutta Lampe was married to Peter Stein from 1967 to 1984. She passed away in Berlin on December 3, 2020, after a long illness. She was almost 83 years old.
