Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, born on December 11, 1969, is a well-known Indian personality. She is famous for being both a great athlete and a politician. She used to be a middle-distance runner, which means she ran races like the 800 meters and 1500 meters. Later, she became a Member of Parliament (MP) in India. An MP is someone elected by people to represent them in the country's main law-making body, the Lok Sabha.

Meet Jyotirmoyee Sikdar
Jyotirmoyee Sikdar was born in a place called Debagram in the Nadia district of West Bengal. Her parents are Gurudas Sikdar and Nihar Sikdar. She finished her studies up to the Higher Secondary level. In 1994, she married Avtar Singh, and they have a son together.
A Star Athlete
Before entering politics, Jyotirmoyee Sikdar was a very successful athlete. She was especially good at running middle-distance races. Her hard work and talent brought her many medals for India.
Winning Medals
In 1995, she won a gold medal in the 800 meters race at the 1995 Asian Athletics Championships held in Jakarta, Indonesia. She also won a silver medal in the 4x400 meters relay race at the same event.
Her success continued in 1998 at the 1998 Asian Athletics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. There, she earned two bronze medals, one for the 800 meters and another for the 1500 meters. She also got a silver medal in the 4x400 meters relay.
The same year, 1998, was even more amazing for her at the Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand. She won two gold medals! She was the fastest in both the 800 meters and the 1500 meters races.
From Sports to Politics
After her successful sports career, Jyotirmoyee Sikdar decided to serve her country in a different way: through politics. She became a Member of Parliament for the Krishnanagar area in the 14th Lok Sabha. She was a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from 2004 to 2009.
In the 2009 general election, she lost her seat to another politician, Tapas Paul. After this, she was not very active in politics for some time. However, in 2019, she showed her support for the All India Trinamool Congress party. The next year, in 2020, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Awards and Recognition
Jyotirmoyee Sikdar's amazing achievements in sports were recognized with some of India's highest awards.
- In 1995, she received the Arjuna Award. This award is given to athletes for their outstanding performance in sports.
- For the years 1998–1999, she was honored with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award. This is the highest sports honor in India, given for spectacular performance in sports over a period of four years.
- In 2003, she was awarded the Padma Shri. This is one of the highest civilian awards in India, given to people who have made great contributions in various fields.
