Jörg Heinrich was born on December 6, 1969. He is a German professional football manager and a former player. Jörg was known for being a very flexible player. He could play in many different spots on the field. He played in defense as a centre-back (center defender) or left-back (left defender). He also played in midfield as a left midfielder or a defensive midfielder (a player who protects the defense). Today, he works as an assistant manager for Borussia Dortmund.

Jörg Heinrich's Football Journey

Jörg Heinrich started his football career playing for smaller clubs in East Germany. In 1990, he joined an amateur team called Kickers Emden. He played there for four seasons. For three of those seasons, the team was in the third division of German football.

Joining SC Freiburg

In the summer of 1994, Jörg Heinrich moved to Bundesliga side SC Freiburg. This was the start of his professional football career. He played his first Bundesliga game on August 20, 1994. He came in as a substitute in a match against Karlsruher SC.

Jörg quickly became a regular player for Freiburg. In his first season, he played in 33 out of 34 Bundesliga matches. He also scored seven goals for the team. His goals helped SC Freiburg finish in a surprising third place in the league that season. He scored his first Bundesliga goal in his second game for Freiburg. It was the final goal in a big 5–1 win against FC Bayern Munich.

Success with Borussia Dortmund

After playing eight more Bundesliga matches for SC Freiburg, Jörg Heinrich moved to Borussia Dortmund in January 1996. He played in all 17 Bundesliga matches for Dortmund until the end of the 1995–96 season. That season, he helped the club win the Bundesliga championship title.

Jörg was a key player for Dortmund for the next two seasons. He played in 64 out of 68 possible Bundesliga matches. He scored 11 Bundesliga goals for Borussia Dortmund during his two and a half seasons there. In 1997, he achieved a huge success. He won the UEFA Champions League with Borussia Dortmund. He played the entire 90 minutes in their 3–1 victory over Juventus Turin in the final game.

Playing in Italy and Return to Dortmund

In the summer of 1998, Jörg Heinrich moved to Italy. He joined the Italian club ACF Fiorentina. He played there for two seasons. During his time with Fiorentina, he played in 57 Serie A matches and scored five goals.

He then returned to Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2000. He played three more seasons for Dortmund. He was a regular player in his first season back. In 2002, he won another Bundesliga championship title with the club. Between 2000 and 2003, Jörg Heinrich played in 63 Bundesliga matches for Dortmund. He scored seven goals for the team. He also played in seven matches in the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League season.

Later Career and Retirement

In the summer of 2003, Jörg Heinrich left Borussia Dortmund for 1. FC Köln. He played in 20 Bundesliga matches for them in the next season. He ended his professional playing career in the spring of 2004. His last Bundesliga match was on March 27, 2004. It was a 3–0 loss against SC Freiburg, which was his first professional club.

After retiring from professional football, he continued to play as an amateur. He played in the fourth-division Oberliga NOFV-Nord. He spent one season with Ludwigsfelder FC. Then he played half a season with 1. FC Union Berlin. He finished his playing career there in December 2005. After that, he worked for Union Berlin as their sports director. From August 2006, he also played sometimes for a fifth-division team called TSV Chemie Premnitz.

Playing for Germany

Jörg Heinrich was a member of the Germany national team from 1995 to 2002. He played in 37 international matches, which are called "caps," and scored two goals for his country.

He played his first international game against Italy on June 21, 1995. He was part of the German team for the 1998 World Cup in France. He played in all five matches there. The team was surprisingly knocked out by Croatia in the quarterfinals. He also played in all three of Germany's matches at the 1999 Confederations Cup in Mexico. In that tournament, the team was eliminated in the group stage.
