Kára McCullough Temple (born September 9, 1991) is an American scientist and former beauty queen. She became famous after winning the Miss USA 2017 pageant. As Miss USA, Kára represented the United States at the Miss Universe 2017 competition. She made it into the Top 10 finalists there.
Before becoming Miss USA, Kára was crowned Miss District of Columbia USA 2017. She was the fourth woman from the District of Columbia to win the Miss USA title. Her win, along with the previous year's winner, Deshauna Barber, marked a special moment. It was the first time a state had won Miss USA two years in a row since Texas did it in 1988 and 1989.
Early Life and Education
Kára McCullough was born in Naples, Italy. Her mother, Betty Ann Parker, served in the United States Navy for 23 years. Because of her mother's military career, Kára lived in many different places. These included Sicily, South Korea, Japan, and Hawaii. She later grew up and finished high school in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Kára went to South Carolina State University, which is a historically Black college or university (HBCU). She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Her studies focused on radiochemistry, which is about the chemistry of radioactive materials. While at college, she was also named the 75th Miss South Carolina State University. She was a member of several important science groups. These included the American Chemical Society and the Health Physics Society. She was also part of the American Nuclear Society. Kára was recognized for her academic achievements. She was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society. She also joined the National Society of Black Engineers.
Before winning Miss USA, Kára worked as an emergency preparedness specialist. She worked for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Her job was to help prepare for and respond to nuclear incidents.
Journey to Miss USA
Kára McCullough competed in the Miss District of Columbia USA pageant twice before winning. She was the first runner-up in both 2015 and 2016. In 2017, she finally won the Miss District of Columbia USA crown. The previous winner, Deshauna Barber, crowned her.
On May 14, 2017, Kára competed in the Miss USA 2017 pageant in Las Vegas. She won the competition, becoming Miss USA. The first runner-up was Chhavi Verg from New Jersey. Meridith Gould from Minnesota was the second runner-up.
During the Miss USA pageant, Kára received a lot of attention. She chose to compete with her natural hair. Many people saw this as a sign of support for the natural hair movement. This movement encourages people to embrace their natural hair textures. Kára also shared some unique opinions during the question-and-answer part of the competition. She called herself an "equalist" instead of a feminist. She was also the seventh Miss USA winner to be born outside the United States.
As Miss USA, Kára represented the United States at the Miss Universe 2017 pageant. This competition took place on November 26, 2017, in Las Vegas. Kára made it into the top ten finalists. The winner of Miss Universe that year was Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters from South Africa.
On May 21, 2018, Kára crowned her successor, Sarah Rose Summers. This happened at the Miss USA 2018 competition in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Personal Life
In 2020, Kára McCullough married Garrett Temple. Garrett is a professional basketball player. They had a private wedding ceremony. Kára and Garrett have two children together.
