Kára McCullough Temple is an American beauty queen. She won the title of Miss USA 2017. After winning Miss USA, Kára represented the United States at the Miss Universe 2017 competition. She made it into the Top 10 finalists there.
Before becoming Miss USA, Kára was crowned Miss District of Columbia USA 2017. She was the fourth woman from the District of Columbia to win the Miss USA title. Her win, along with the win of the previous Miss USA, Deshauna Barber, was special. It was the first time a state had won the Miss USA title two years in a row since 1988 and 1989.
Early Life and School
Kára McCullough was born in Naples, Italy. Her mother was in the United States Navy for 23 years. Because of her mother's job, Kára lived in many different places. These included Sicily, South Korea, Japan, and Hawaii. She later grew up and finished high school in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Kára went to South Carolina State University, which is a historically Black college or university (HBCU). She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Her studies focused on radiochemistry, which is about how chemicals change using radiation. While at college, she was also named the 75th Miss South Carolina State University. She was a member of several important science groups. These included the American Chemical Society and the Health Physics Society. She was also part of the American Nuclear Society. Kára was honored by being inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society. She also joined the National Society of Black Engineers.
Before she became Miss USA, Kára worked as an emergency preparedness specialist. She worked for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Her job was to help make sure nuclear facilities were ready for any emergencies.
Pageant Journey
Kára McCullough competed in the Miss District of Columbia USA pageant twice before winning. She was the first runner-up in both 2015 and 2016. In 2017, she finally won the Miss District of Columbia USA title. The previous Miss USA, Deshauna Barber, crowned her.
On May 14, 2017, Kára competed in the Miss USA 2017 pageant. The event took place in Las Vegas. She won the competition, beating out contestants from other states. The first runner-up was Chhavi Verg from New Jersey. Meridith Gould from Minnesota was the second runner-up.
During her time at Miss USA, Kára received a lot of attention. Many people praised her for choosing to compete with her natural hair. This was seen as a way to support the natural hair movement. Kára also shared her views on important topics. She said she was an "equalist" rather than a feminist. Kára is also special because she is the seventh Miss USA winner who was born outside the United States.
As Miss USA, Kára represented the United States at the Miss Universe 2017 pageant. This competition was held on November 26, 2017, also in Las Vegas. Kára made it to the top ten finalists. However, she was eliminated before the final round. The winner of Miss Universe that year was Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters from South Africa.
On May 21, 2018, Kára crowned her successor, Sarah Rose Summers. This happened at the Miss USA 2018 competition in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Personal Life
In 2020, Kára McCullough married Garrett Temple. He is a professional basketball player. They had a private wedding ceremony. Kára and Garrett have two children together. Garrett's father, Collis Temple, was also a professional basketball player.
