Garrett Temple: A Basketball Journey
Early Life and High School Basketball
Garrett Temple grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He went to LSU Laboratory School for high school. In his senior year, he was a star player. He averaged almost 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. He led his team, University High, to win the 2004 Class 2A state championship.
Besides basketball, Temple was also good at track and field. He was a specialist in the long jump and triple jump.
College Years at LSU
After high school, Temple went to Louisiana State University (LSU). He spent his first year practicing and improving his game. When he started playing in the 2005–06 season, he quickly became known as a great defensive player. He played in 36 games, starting 35 of them.
In his sophomore year, he had a good assist-to-turnover ratio. This means he passed the ball well and didn't lose it often. He even traveled to China with an all-star team of college players. By his senior year, Temple had played more minutes than any other player in LSU history. He was also named to the All-SEC Defensive team. This award recognized him as one of the best defensive players in his college conference.
Starting His NBA Career
After college, Garrett Temple was not chosen in the 2009 NBA draft. However, he didn't give up! He joined the Houston Rockets for the NBA Summer League. He later signed with the Rockets but was waived. He then played for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the NBA D-League (now G-League).
Temple then signed short contracts with several NBA teams. These included the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, and San Antonio Spurs. He also played for the Erie BayHawks and the Milwaukee Bucks. He even played for the Charlotte Bobcats and a team in Italy called Novipiù Casale Monferrato. This early part of his career showed his determination to stay in the NBA.
Playing for the Washington Wizards
In December 2012, Temple signed with the Washington Wizards. This was a big step for his career. He stayed with the Wizards for several seasons. He re-signed with them in 2013 and 2014.
While with the Wizards, Temple showed how much he had improved. In November 2014, he scored a career-high 18 points. He matched that record in November 2015. Then, in December 2015, he set new career highs twice! He scored 21 points against the Charlotte Hornets and then 23 points against the Sacramento Kings. He even scored 20 points or more in three straight games. This was a first for an NBA player who hadn't done it in his first 250 games.
Moving to Other NBA Teams
After his time with the Wizards, Temple returned to the Sacramento Kings in 2016. He continued to be a strong player, especially on defense. In January 2018, he had an amazing game. He scored a career-high 34 points against the Orlando Magic.
Temple then played for the Memphis Grizzlies in 2018. He scored 30 points in a game against the Atlanta Hawks. Later, he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. In 2019, he signed with the Brooklyn Nets. He then played for the Chicago Bulls in 2020.
In 2021, Temple was traded to his hometown team, the New Orleans Pelicans. He played there for two seasons. In 2023, he joined the Toronto Raptors, where he plays today.
Life Off the Court
Garrett Temple comes from a family of basketball players. His father, Collis Temple, was the first African American to play basketball at LSU. Garrett has two older brothers and a younger sister. His brother, Collis III, also played basketball at LSU.
Garrett Temple is a Christian. He often wears a wristband that says "In Jesus Name I Play." In 2020, he married Kára McCullough, who was Miss USA 2017. They have two children together.
Community Involvement
Temple is also very involved in helping others. He is part of a group called the "Starting Five." This group, along with other NBA players, works with a charity called Hoops2O. Their goal is to raise money to build wells in East Africa. These wells provide clean water to communities that need it. By February 2020, Hoops2O had funded ten wells in Tanzania and Kenya. These wells brought clean water to over 52,000 people.
