K-brot facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

K-Brot was a special kind of bread made in Germany during World War I. It was created because there wasn't enough grain to make regular bread. This bread was made with potatoes and rye flour. At first, it had 5% potato. Later, it had up to 20% potato, especially for the poorest people. Many people, especially workers, didn't like K-Brot. They said it didn't have a good crust and wasn't as tasty as normal bread. Richer people still bought bread made with wheat flour.

What Does K-Brot Mean?

The name K-Brot comes from two German words. "Kartoffelbrot" means "potato bread." "Kriegsbrot" means "war bread." So, K-Brot is a short way to say "potato war bread."

Why Was K-Brot Made?

During World War I, Germany faced serious food shortages. They relied on other countries for milk, butter, and meat. Even their own crops like rye and potatoes needed imported fertilizers to grow well.

Life was much harder in Germany than in the Allied countries. By the middle of the war, German men often had to live on only 1,200 calories a day. Women and poorer people had even less food.

Britain's navy blocked German ports starting in 1914. This made it very hard for Germany to get food from other countries. By 1917, Germany had to rely almost entirely on the food it could grow itself.

Not Enough Grain

Bread was hard to find throughout the war. Germany's soil wasn't great for growing wheat. Also, imports of wheat were stopped by 1914. To make things worse, German farmers had promised to send rye to Russia just before the war started.

For German workers, bread rolls were a common breakfast. Sandwiches were a main meal during the day. People called these their "bread meals." As bread became harder to get, many Germans felt angry and upset. They sang songs about how their wages were barely enough to buy dry bread.

Growing Unhappiness

In the morning when I'm hungry
I eat a buttered roll
Along with it the schnapps tastes good
Out of my full bottle.

To calm the growing anger, the German government made a rule. They said that rye bread and "gray bread" (a mix of wheat and rye) had to contain 5% potato. This new bread was called K-Brot.

Only the poor people ate K-Brot. They complained that it didn't have a good, crispy crust. They thought it was much worse than regular bread. People who could afford it still bought bread and cakes made with pure wheat. This made the poor people even more upset. They felt like their country was falling apart, and they couldn't enjoy the simple things in life anymore.
