Triple Entente facts for kids

The Triple Entente (which means Triple Agreement in English) was an important alliance between three major European powers. These were the United Kingdom, France, and the Russian Empire. This alliance was formed to create a "balance of power" in Europe. This meant that no single group of countries would be much stronger than another.
The Triple Entente was a way to balance the power of another big alliance. This other group was called the "Triple Alliance". It included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The idea was that if one alliance became too strong, it could lead to war.

How the Alliance Formed
The Triple Entente started with a series of agreements. One key agreement was the Anglo-Russian Entente in 1907. This was a deal between Britain and Russia. Before this, Britain and France had also made agreements. These steps brought the three countries closer.
The alliance became even stronger over time. Other countries like Japan, the United States, and Spain also made agreements with these powers. This network of friendships helped keep the balance of power. The main goal was to prevent any one country or group from dominating Europe.
The Triple Entente and World War I
At first, the agreements of the Triple Entente were not strictly military. They were more about friendly understanding. However, as tensions grew in Europe, these agreements became very important. They turned into a military alliance. This happened because of growing problems between the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente.
When the First World War began, the Triple Entente became a key part of the "Allies". These were the countries fighting against Germany and Austria-Hungary.
Here's how the alliance changed during the war:
- In 1915, Italy left the Triple Alliance. It then joined the Entente powers. Italy fought against Austria-Hungary starting in May 1915. It fought against Germany from August 1916.
- The Russian Revolution happened in October 1917. This led to Russia leaving the alliance and the war.
- Even after Russia left, the military alliance between France and the UK continued. It lasted until 1940. That's when Nazi Germany invaded France during the Second World War.
