People also call it the Nullathanni Estate or the Kanan Devan Hills Plantation (KDHP) Tea Museum. This museum shows how tea became so important in this part of India.

Discovering the History of Tea

The tea museum opened its doors on April 1, 2004. It was created by Tata Tea. The museum helps us understand how tea plantations started and grew in the mountains of Kerala. These mountains are part of the Western Ghats in the Idukki district.

How Tea Plantations Grew

The land where the museum stands has been a tea estate since the 1880s. It is owned by the Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company. The museum shows how Munnar became a major center for growing tea. It displays old machines and photos. These items tell the story of how the tea industry grew.

Visitors can see how tea is processed step by step. You can learn about the "Crush, Tear, Curl" method. This is how black tea varieties from Kerala are made. The museum has old machines, like a tea roller from 1905. It also shows how tea factories became fully automated over time.

Unique Exhibits and Old Relics

The museum also has interesting old items. There is a power plant from the 1920s that used to generate electricity for the estate. You can also see a wheel from the Kundala Valley Railway. This railway carried tea and people between Munnar and Top Station until 1924. A part of the museum shows furniture and office items from the old Colonial times in Kerala. You can even try different kinds of tea in a special tasting area. A very old burial urn, found in a tea estate, is also on display. It dates back to the 2nd century.
