Tata Consumer Products is a big Indian company that makes everyday items like food and drinks. It is part of the famous Tata Group. The company's main office is in Kolkata, India. Its corporate headquarters are in Mumbai.

This company is one of the world's largest makers of tea. It is also a major producer of coffee.

The company used to be called Tata Global Beverages Limited (TGBL). In February 2020, it joined with the consumer products part of Tata Chemicals. This created Tata Consumer Products. Now, the company focuses on food and drinks. About 56% of its money comes from India. The rest comes from its international businesses.

After the merger, Tata Consumer Products owns many popular brands. These include Tata Salt, Tata Tea, Tetley, Eight O'Clock Coffee, Good Earth Tea, Tata Sampann, and Tata Starbucks. Company History

Starting Years (1980-1990)

In the early 1980s, making tea in India became harder. Costs for growing tea went up. Taxes were also high. India faced competition from other countries in the world tea market.

In 1983, Tata Tea bought out the James Finlay group. This made Tata Tea its own company. That same year, the company decided to sell branded tea directly to people. They launched their first brand, Tata Tea. Other brands like Kannan Devan, Agni, Gemini, and Chakra Gold followed. Even though India was the biggest tea market, people took time to accept branded tea.

In 1987, Tata Tea started a company in the United States called Tata Tea Inc.

Growing Globally (1990-2000)

In the 1990s, Tata Tea wanted to sell its brands worldwide. In 1992, it teamed up with Britain's Tetley Tea for exports. The company also bought a large part of Consolidated Coffee Ltd. (now Tata Coffee Ltd.). They also started a joint project to manage farms in Sri Lanka. Tata Tea Inc. in the U.S. made and sold instant tea.

By 1999, Tata Tea's brands held 25% of the market in India. The company had 74 tea gardens. It produced 6.2 crore kilograms of tea each year. Two-thirds of this was packaged and branded.

Big Changes (2000-2010)

In 2000, Tata Tea bought the Tetley Group from the United Kingdom. This was a very big purchase for an Indian company at the time. Tetley was the world's second-largest tea company. It was a market leader in Britain and Canada. It was also popular in the United States, Australia, and the Middle East.

Tetley started in 1837. It was the first British tea company to introduce the tea bag in the UK in 1953. Tetley now makes up about two-thirds of Tata Tea's total sales.

In 2006, Tata Tea bought Eight O'Clock Coffee. This was a coffee company based in the U.S.

New Partnerships (2010-2019)

On January 30, 2012, Tata Consumer Products Limited and Starbucks created a joint company. It is called Tata Starbucks Limited. This company runs Starbucks stores in India. The stores opened in 2012 in Delhi and Mumbai. These coffee shops get their coffee beans from Tata Coffee, another company under Tata Consumer Products.

Recent Growth (2019-Present)

On May 15, 2019, Tata Chemicals Limited (TCL) announced a plan. They would combine their consumer products business with Tata Global Beverages (TGBL). This merger happened on February 7, 2020. After this, TGBL changed its name to Tata Consumer Products Limited.

This new company brought together many food and drink brands. These include Tata Salt, Tata Tea, Tata Sampann, Tetley, Soulfull, and Himalayan mineral water.

In November 2021, Tata Consumer Products took full control of Tata SmartFoodz Limited.

On May 1, 2022, Tata Consumer Products announced that Tata Coffee would join with it. This merger was planned to finish in late 2023. Tata Coffee shareholders would get 3 shares in Tata Consumer Products for every 10 shares of Tata Coffee they owned. In July 2022, Tata Consumer Products launched new honey products and fruit preserves. These were under the company's Himalayan brand. Also in July 2022, the company launched plant-based meat products. These are sold under the brand name Tata Simply Better.

In January 2024, Tata Consumer bought Capital Foods. This company owns the Ching's Secret and Smith & Jones brands. They also bought Organic India.
