Tata Coffee is an Indian company that makes and sells coffee, tea, and pepper. It is a part of the big Tata Group and is owned by Tata Consumer Products.
Tata Coffee owns 19 large coffee farms, called estates, in South India. These farms are in Karnataka (in Chikmagalur, Kodagu, and Hassan) and Tamil Nadu (in Valparai district). Tata Coffee is known for being the biggest company in the world that grows, processes, and sells coffee all by itself.
The company also works with Starbucks Coffee Company. They supply coffee beans to Starbucks stores in India. Both companies want to make Indian coffee better and more famous around the world. They also work on growing coffee in ways that are good for the environment. In 2012, they even started a joint company called Tata Starbucks. Tata Coffee has also built a large instant coffee factory in Vietnam.

How Tata Coffee Started
Tata Coffee began its journey in 1922. Back then, two coffee farm companies from London joined together. They were called Coorg Co. Ltd. and Pollibetta Coffee Estates Co. Ltd. A company from Edinburgh bought them and created Consolidated Coffee Estates Ltd. This made it the largest coffee farm in India at the time.
In 1936, a person named Ivor Bull became the Chairman. He came to Coorg to manage the coffee farms. In 1943, Bull bought the company and made it an Indian company. Its main office was in Pollibeta. The company also started selling shares to the public.
Over time, the original Edinburgh company sold its shares to people in India. By 1966, Indian people owned most of the company. Ivor Bull managed the company until he retired in 1966.
Growing Bigger
Between 1966 and 1967, Consolidated Coffee Estates changed its name to Consolidated Coffee Limited. This happened after it merged with other properties in India.
In 1991, Tata Tea Ltd., which is now Tata Consumer Products, bought a big part of Consolidated Coffee Limited. In 1999, more companies joined Consolidated Coffee Limited. This made it the largest company in the world that handles everything from growing to selling coffee. On August 11, 2000, Consolidated Coffee Limited officially became Tata Coffee Limited.
Tata Coffee also bought a part of an Indian coffee shop chain called Barista in 2002. However, they sold their share in Barista in 2004.
In 2005, Tata Coffee bought five tea farms and one coffee farm from its parent company, Tata Tea. They also bought an instant coffee factory. A big step happened in 2006 when Tata Coffee bought an American coffee brand called Eight O'Clock Coffee.
Working with Starbucks
Tata Coffee first agreed to supply coffee beans to the American coffee shop chain Starbucks in 2004. This was the first time Starbucks bought coffee beans from India.
In 2013, Tata Coffee and Starbucks opened a special facility in Kushalnagar, Karnataka. This place roasts and packages coffee beans. These beans are then sent to Tata Starbucks stores in India and to some Starbucks markets overseas. The facility is quite large and can produce a lot of coffee every year.
On May 1, 2022, Tata Consumer Products announced that Tata Coffee would join with them. This merger is planned to be finished by late 2023. This means that for every 10 shares of Tata Coffee, shareholders will get 3 shares in Tata Consumer Products.
Awards and Recognition
Tata Coffee has won many awards for its coffee. Since 2002, the Coffee Board of India has often named Tata Coffee's products the best coffee in India. In 2017, they won this award for the seventh year in a row.
In 2012, Tata Coffee also received the Green Business Leadership Award. This award recognized their efforts to deal with climate change.
On October 16, 2017, Tata Coffee was again named "Best Coffee in India" at the Ernesto Illy Second Annual International Coffee Awards.
Helping the Environment
Tata Coffee cares a lot about protecting nature. The company has many programs to help the environment. They protect over 1,075 hectares of rainforest on their coffee and tea farms.
All 19 of Tata Coffee's farms have special certifications. These include Rainforest Alliance, UTZ, and SA8000. These certifications mean they follow good practices for farming and treating workers fairly. In 2005, Tata Coffee even gave land to a group called Nature Conservation Foundation. This group used the land to grow young rainforest plants.
