KNUM-LP is a special kind of radio station called a low-power FM station. It broadcasts on 96.7 MHz in Portland, Oregon, USA. This station is owned by a group called the Community Alliance of Tenants. It's known as "96.7 The Numberz" and plays rap and hip-hop music. Fun fact: in 2018, some weird noises were heard coming from this station!

How KNUM-LP Started

On November 15, 2013, a group called the Community Alliance of Tenants wanted to start a new radio station. This group helps people who rent homes understand their rights. They asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for permission. The FCC is a government agency that manages radio and TV stations.

Getting Approved

In September 2014, the FCC said yes to their plan. There were four groups who wanted to use the 96.7 MHz radio frequency. Two groups decided not to go forward. The Community Alliance of Tenants and another group, Opal Environmental Justice Oregon, worked together. They moved their planned radio towers a bit so their signals wouldn't get in each other's way.

First Broadcasts

The station officially started broadcasting on September 20, 2017. Its first name, or "call sign," was KZRY-LP. Two people who graduated from Grant High School helped create the station. One of them also helped start another radio station called "XRAY.FM."

When KZRY-LP first went on air, it played a mix of things. You could hear speeches from famous people like Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy. It also played sounds from the Apollo 11 moon mission, some music, and shows from XRAY.FM.

Becoming "The Numberz"

About a year later, on August 29, 2018, the station started broadcasting its regular shows. It also changed its name to KNUM-LP. This new name, "NUM," is a nod to "The Numberz," which is what the station calls itself on air. "The Numberz" refers to parts of Portland where many Black residents have moved. This happened because of something called gentrification. Gentrification is when an older neighborhood changes, often becoming more expensive, and people who lived there for a long time might have to move.
