The Kaṉpi Community and Its People
Kaṉpi is part of a larger area called the Murputja Homelands. This area also includes smaller family places known as outstations, like Angatja and Umpukulu. Most people living in Kaṉpi are Pitjantjatjara people. Their traditional country, which is land important to their ancestors, is very close by.
The community of Kaṉpi began as an outstation for the Baker family. They moved here from other parts of the APY Lands. They wanted to live closer to the land where their ancestors had lived for many generations.
Services in Kaṉpi
Kaṉpi and the nearby community of Nyapaṟi are both small. Because of this, they share many basic services. In Kaṉpi, you can find a workshop and a garage. There is also a day care center for children and an art center where local artists create beautiful works.
Kaṉpi has a community store, which was built in 1996. This store also has a pump where people can get petrol for their vehicles. Food and other supplies are delivered to the store every two weeks. The store serves both Kaṉpi and Nyapaṟi, as well as the smaller outstations nearby.
Health and Education
Local health services for Kaṉpi are based at the clinic in Nyapaṟi. For a while, both Kaṉpi and Nyapaṟi had their own schools, starting in 1987. However, these schools joined together in 1993. A new school, called Murputja Education Centre, was built between the two communities. It is about 9 kilometers east of Kaṉpi and 6 kilometers west of Nyapaṟi.
Time Zone Information
The APY Lands are close to the Northern Territory border. Because of this, they follow the same time zone as the Northern Territory. This means they do not use daylight saving time, unlike the rest of South Australia. The time zone used all year is Australian Central Standard Time (UTC+9:30). This is the same time as Darwin, not Adelaide.
Population Details
