Scientific classification

Kageneckia angustifolia (also known as frangel) is a special type of plant that belongs to the Rosaceae family. This family also includes well-known plants like roses and apples! The frangel plant is found only in Chile, which means it is endemic to that country. You can find it growing in the Chilean Coast Range and the Andes mountains, from the Limari region all the way to Talca.

What the Frangel Plant Looks Like

The frangel is an evergreen plant, meaning its leaves stay green all year round. It can grow as a small tree or a shrub, reaching up to 5 meters (about 16 feet) tall. Its bark is greyish-brown and peels off in long strips.

The leaves of the frangel are very unique. They are tough and leathery, with edges that look like tiny teeth. Each leaf is long and narrow, about 9 cm (3.5 inches) long, and has a shiny light-green color. They also have a small stem called a petiole that connects them to the branch.

Frangel Flowers and Fruits

The frangel plant has star-shaped flowers that are white. These flowers can grow alone or in small groups called inflorescences, usually where a leaf meets the stem. Each flower has 5 sepals, which are like small leaves that protect the bud, forming the calyx. The main part of the flower, called the corolla, is made up of 5 petals.

Male flowers have 15 stamens, which are the parts that produce pollen. The fruit of the frangel is a star-shaped capsule with five sections, about 2–3 cm (1 inch) wide. The seeds inside this capsule have small wings, which help them fly away in the wind.

Uses of the Frangel Plant

The wood from the frangel plant is used to make charcoal. Charcoal is a black material often used for cooking or heating.

Where the Name Frangel Comes From

The scientific name Kageneckia was given in honor of Frederick von Kageneck. He was an Austrian ambassador who lived in Madrid.
