Early Life
Kai Greene was born in Brooklyn, a part of New York City, on July 12, 1975. He had a difficult childhood and spent time in foster care.
When he was a teenager, he discovered bodybuilding. He has said that he started working out to feel stronger and more confident. An employee at a center where he lived gave him a copy of Arnold Schwarzenegger's book, The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding. This book inspired him and even helped him learn to read better. Bodybuilding gave him a positive way to focus his energy.
Bodybuilding Career
Greene dedicated himself to bodybuilding and started competing in events organized by the National Physique Committee (NPC). His goal was to become a professional in the IFBB. After winning the 2004 NPC Team Universe competition, he earned his professional status.
Mr. Olympia Competitions
The Mr. Olympia competition is the biggest event in professional bodybuilding. Greene's rivalry with Phil Heath at these events became legendary. For three years in a row (2012, 2013, and 2014), Greene placed second right behind Heath. Their competition on stage was intense and exciting for fans to watch.
In 2015, Greene did not compete in the Mr. Olympia. This was because of a business disagreement. He had started his own company, but this caused a problem with his contract for the Mr. Olympia event. Because of this issue, he was not able to sign up in time.
Even though he missed the 2015 competition, Greene returned to win the 2016 Arnold Classic. He has not competed in bodybuilding since then.
On Screen and Training Style
Greene has appeared in several documentary films about bodybuilding. These movies show his intense training and his thoughts on the sport.
- Overkill (2010): This film follows his preparation for the 2009 Mr. Olympia.
- Redemption (2010): This sequel shows his training for the 2010 Arnold Classic, which he won.
- Generation Iron (2013): This popular documentary shows the build-up to the 2012 Mr. Olympia and features his rivalry with Phil Heath.
- Kai (2022): This documentary tells his life story.
Training Philosophy
Greene often talks about the "mind-muscle connection." He believes that the most important part of training is focusing your mind on the exact muscles you are using. He says that by concentrating, you can make your mind and muscles "speak the same language." This helps achieve better results from workouts.
Beyond Bodybuilding
Besides his bodybuilding career, Kai Greene is also involved in acting, art, and business.
Acting and Art
Greene has acted in movies and television shows. He appeared in the comedy film College Debts (2015) and the martial arts movie Crazy Fist (2018). He also had a role in the second season of the popular Netflix series Stranger Things (2017).
Greene is also a talented artist. He often draws and paints pictures of himself. He says this helps him imagine the body he wants to build. In 2011, he had an art show to display his work. He believes that being a bodybuilder is like being a sculptor, where his body is the art.
Business and Media
In 2015, Greene started his own supplement brand called Dynamik Muscle. He also created a training program with the motto, "Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance." He is sponsored by the sportswear company Ryderwear, which has released clothing and shoes with his name on them.
Greene has also hosted podcasts. From 2015, he co-hosted the Generation Iron podcast. In 2020, he started his own podcast called Getting It Done.
