Kaisa Miettinen is a Finnish mathematician and a professor at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland. She used to be the vice rector (a high-ranking leader) of the university.
Professor Miettinen teaches and researches industrial optimization. This means she helps industries make the best choices when they have many goals at once. She also leads a group that focuses on multiobjective optimization.
Her research helps solve problems where you need to find the best solution when there are many things to consider. For example, how to make something cheaper, faster, and more environmentally friendly all at the same time. She uses special computer methods and tools to do this.

Education and Early Career
Kaisa Miettinen studied mathematics at the University of Jyväskylä in Jyväskylä, Finland. She earned her Master of Science degree in 1988. Later, she completed her PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in mathematical information technology in 1994.
Since 1987, she has worked in teaching and research roles. She became an adjunct professor (a special kind of professor) in information technology in 1997.
Important Roles and Research
Professor Miettinen has held many important positions. From 2004 to 2007, she was a professor of financial mathematics at the Helsinki School of Economics. This school is now part of Aalto University.
Since 2007, she has been a professor of industrial optimization at the University of Jyväskylä. From 2012 to 2017, she was the vice-rector in charge of research at the university. This meant she helped guide all the research happening there.
She has also been a visiting professor at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. Since 2008, she has been an adjunct professor at Aalto University.
Kaisa Miettinen has also led important groups and committees. She was the president of the International Society on Multiple Criteria Decision Making from 2011 to 2015. This society helps people make decisions when there are many different things to think about.
Awards and Recognitions
Professor Miettinen has received special awards for her work:
- In 2009, she won the Väisälä Prize from the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. This award was for her great achievements in mathematics research.
- In 2011, she received an award from the International Society on Multiple Criteria Decision Making. This was for her role as the chair of their conference.
Software Development
In 1995, Kaisa Miettinen and her team at the University of Jyväskylä created special computer programs. These programs help solve complex optimization problems.
- WWW-NIMBUS was the first program of its kind that you could use over the internet.
- IND-NIMBUS is another program that helps with multiobjective optimization.
Today, she and her research group are still working on new, open-source software. This means the software is free for others to use and improve.
Books and Publications
Kaisa Miettinen has written a book called Nonlinear Multiobjective Optimization. This book explains how to solve problems where you have many goals and the relationships between them are not simple.
She has also helped edit several other books and collections of articles. These include:
- Multiobjective Optimization: Interactive and Evolutionary Approaches
- Evolutionary Algorithms in Engineering and Computer Science
She has written over 140 articles that have been checked by other experts. These articles are published in top science journals and conference papers.
