Kalmar Island is a small, mostly ice-covered island located near the Antarctic Peninsula. It's part of a group of islands called the Dannebrog Islands, which are themselves part of the larger Wilhelm Archipelago. This island is about 1.12 kilometers (less than a mile) long and 245 meters wide. Its total area is about 16.15 hectares, which is roughly the size of 20 football fields!
The name "Kalmar Island" comes from the Bulgarian word "kalmar," which means squid. People thought the island's shape looked a bit like a squid, and many islands in this area are named after things they resemble.
