Discovering the Dannebrog Islands
These islands are part of the larger Wilhelm Archipelago. A German explorer named Eduard Dallmann first saw and named the Wilhelm Archipelago in 1873–74.
Later, in 1897–99, another group of explorers arrived. This was the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, led by Adrien de Gerlache. They explored the area again.
How the Islands Got Their Name
The Belgian expedition decided to name this specific group of islands "Dannebrog Islands." They did this to thank Denmark for supporting their journey. "Dannebrog" is the name of the flag of Denmark.
Even though the Belgian expedition named the whole area "Dannebrog Islands," Dallmann's original name, Wilhelm Archipelago, stayed for the larger group. The name Dannebrog was then used only for this smaller cluster of islands.
