Taralezh Island (which means Hedgehog Island in Bulgarian) is a small island in the cold lands of Antarctica. It's part of a group of islands called the Dannebrog Islands, which are themselves part of the larger Wilhelm Archipelago. This island is about 470 meters long (that's almost half a kilometer!) and 232 meters wide. It has a total area of 6.71 hectares, which is roughly the size of 10 football fields.
The island gets its unique name, Taralezh, because its shape looks a bit like a hedgehog. Many islands in this area have names that describe what they look like or what they remind people of.
Where is Taralezh Island Located?
Taralezh Island is found in the Antarctic Peninsula region, a long, curving arm of land that stretches out from the main continent of Antarctica. Its exact spot is at 65°03′44″S latitude and 64°06′27″W longitude.
This small island is surrounded by other islands in the Wilhelm Archipelago:
- It's just 45 meters north of Spatnik Island.
- You'll find it about 2.4 kilometers east-southeast of Sprey Island.
- It's also 1.67 kilometers southwest of Revolver Island.
- And about 2.54 kilometers west-northwest of the western tip of Booth Island.
British explorers mapped this area in 2001, helping us know exactly where Taralezh Island is.
