The Kanatuashuekanutsh River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Kanishushteu River. This area is mostly wild and unorganized, known as Lac-Ashuapmushuan. It's part of the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.

The river valley is mainly used for forestry, which means cutting down trees. It's also a place for fun outdoor activities like recreational tourism. The entire river runs through the Ashuapmushuan Wildlife Reserve. This reserve helps protect the animals and nature in the area.

Where the River Flows: Its Journey

The Kanatuashuekanutsh River starts from a lake called Sanicles Lake. This lake is quite high up, about 354 meters (1,161 feet) above sea level. It's surrounded by mountains and forests.

The Sanicles Lake is located in a wild forest area. It's about 8.9 kilometers (5.5 miles) northwest of where the Kanatuashuekanutsh River joins the Kanishushteu River. It's also about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) northeast of a larger lake called Chigoubiche Lake.

River's Path and Length

From Sanicles Lake, the Kanatuashuekanutsh River flows for about 6.9 kilometers (4.3 miles). As it flows, it drops about 64 meters (210 feet) in height. The river stays entirely within the forest.

Along its journey, the river gets water from other small lakes. It collects water from Lake Levaux and Lake Salignac. It also picks up water from another small lake before it reaches its end.

Where the River Ends

The Kanatuashuekanutsh River eventually flows into the Kanishushteu River. This meeting point is about 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) west of the Ashuapmushuan River. It's also about 68.7 kilometers (42.7 miles) northwest of the town of Saint-Félicien.

From there, the water continues its long journey. It flows down the Kanishushteu River, then into the Ashuapmushuan River. After that, it crosses Lac Saint-Jean, which is a large lake. Finally, it joins the Saguenay River and eventually reaches the estuary of Saint Lawrence near Tadoussac.

Naming the River

The name “rivière Kanatuashuekanutsh” was officially recognized on December 2, 1982. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like the official naming committee for places in Quebec.
