The Kanishushteu River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Ashuapmushuan River. This river is located in a special area called the unorganized territory of Lac-Ashuapmushuan. This means it's a wild area without towns.

The Kanishushteu River valley is mostly covered by forests. Forest roads help people get around. These roads connect to a main road called Route 167.

The main activities here are forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. People also visit for fun activities like fishing or hiking. The entire river runs through the Ashuapmushuan Wildlife Reserve. This is a protected area for animals and nature.

Where the Kanishushteu River Starts

The Kanishushteu River begins at a place called Robinos Lake. This lake is about 0.64 km (0.40 mi) long. It sits high up in the mountains, at an altitude of 366 m (1,201 ft). The lake is surrounded by thick forests.

The start of the river, at Robinos Lake, is in the wild, unorganized territory of Lac-Ashuapmushuan. It is about 4.3 km (2.7 mi) southwest of the Ashuapmushuan River. It is also 13.5 km (8.4 mi) northwest of the Chigoubiche River.

The River's Journey

From Robinos Lake, the Kanishushteu River flows for 14.0 km (8.7 mi). As it flows, it drops 106 m (348 ft) in height. The entire journey is through a forest.

First, the river flows northeast for about 1.7 km (1.1 mi). It picks up water from Lac Vertain, which comes from the north. Then, it makes a turn.

Next, it flows southeast for 3.6 km (2.2 mi). In this part, it goes through marshy areas. It also collects water from three other lakes: des Mitrelles, Magot, and Agréable. It then meets the water flowing out of Lac Suspendu.

After that, the river continues south for 5.3 km (3.3 mi). It passes through two small lakes. It also gets water from a stream coming from the northwest. It crosses a third lake at an altitude of 316 m (1,037 ft). Near the end of this section, it goes through another small lake. Finally, it meets the Kanatuashuekanutsh River.

The last part of the river flows southeast for 3.4 km (2.1 mi). It mostly goes in a straight line. Right at the end, it makes a small curve to the northeast.

Where the River Ends

The Kanishushteu River empties into a small bay. This bay is about 0.3 km (0.19 mi) long. It connects to a bend in the Ashuapmushuan River. The Kanishushteu River joins the Ashuapmushuan River at the bottom of some rapids.

This meeting point is about 65.3 km (40.6 mi) northwest of the town of Saint-Félicien. It is also 74.9 km (46.5 mi) northwest of where the Ashuapmushuan River itself ends.

From the Kanishushteu River's mouth, the water travels a long way. It goes down the Ashuapmushuan River for 92.9 km (57.7 mi). Then, it crosses Lac Saint-Jean for its full length, which is 41.1 km (25.5 mi). After that, it follows the Saguenay River for 172.3 km (107.1 mi) eastward. Finally, it reaches Tadoussac and joins the huge estuary of Saint Lawrence.
