Kane Mountain is a mountain located in the Adirondack Mountains region of New York State. It stands north of the small community of Canada Lake. At the very top of Kane Mountain, you'll find the Kane Mountain Fire Observation Station.

The Kane Mountain Fire Observation Station is a special historic site. It includes a tall, steel tower that was built in 1925. This tower is about 60-foot-tall (18 m)! There's also a small cabin nearby where the fire observer used to live.

Fire towers like this one were super important for protecting the Adirondack Forest Preserve from dangerous forest fires. People called "fire observers" would climb to the top of the tower. From there, they could see for miles around. If they spotted smoke, they would quickly report it. This helped firefighters get to the fire fast and stop it from spreading.

The tower was made by a company called Aermotor Corporation. It was like a frontline defense, helping to keep our forests safe.

Hiking Trails to the Summit

You can hike to the top of Kane Mountain using two different trails. Both trails start from Green Lake Road.

The Red Trail

The main trail is called the Red Trail. It's about 0.6 miles (0.97 km) long. This trail climbs about 600 feet (180 m) to reach the mountain's summit. It's considered a moderate hike, meaning it's not too easy, but not super hard either.

The Yellow Trail

The second trail is the Yellow Trail. This one is a bit longer, about 1.2 miles (1.9 km) long. You can also get to this trail from the Pine Lake Campground.

Trails to Nearby Lakes

Close to the Green Lake Road parking lot, another trail branches off. This trail leads to Stewart Lake and Indian Lake. This hike is about 2.3 miles (3.7 km) long. At each of these lakes, you can find simple campsites if you want to stay overnight.
