Exploring Kangaroo Mountain

Kangaroo Mountain stands tall at an elevation of 6,697 feet (2,041 meters) above sea level. This makes it one of the higher peaks in California. The very top of the mountain marks the southern edge of the Red Buttes Wilderness. This wilderness area is a special protected place. It is managed by the Rogue River – Siskiyou National Forest.

The Pacific Crest Trail

A famous long-distance hiking path, the Pacific Crest Trail, goes along the southern side of Kangaroo Mountain. Hikers on this trail get to see amazing views as they pass by.

How it Got its Name

It is believed that Kangaroo Mountain was named after the California kangaroo rat. This small animal is known for its long hind legs, which it uses to hop like a kangaroo. It's a fun way to connect the mountain to the wildlife found in the area!
