Kangasniemi is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Southern Savonia region of Finland. It's a place where many people have summer homes because of its beautiful nature.
As of 31 December 2023, about 5,114 people live in Kangasniemi. The total area of the municipality is about 1,326.75 square kilometres (512.26 sq mi). A big part of this area, about 256.86 km2 (99.17 sq mi), is covered by water! This means there are lots of lakes and rivers. The population density is 4.78 inhabitants per square kilometre (12.4/sq mi), which tells us how many people live in each square kilometer.
Kangasniemi is about 250 km (160 mi) away from Helsinki, the capital city of Finland. It's also not too far from other cities like Mikkeli (50 km (31 mi) northwest) and Jyväskylä (63 km (39 mi) southeast).
Many people from other places own nearly 3,600 summer houses in Kangasniemi. This means that during the summer months, the number of people living there almost doubles! The main language spoken in Kangasniemi is Finnish.

History of Kangasniemi
Kangasniemi became an official municipality in the year 1867. This means it started to manage its own local affairs and services for its residents.
Nature and Scenery
Kangasniemi is famous for its amazing natural beauty, especially its many lakes. There are over 1,550 kilometres (960 mi) of shoreline, which is like having a very long coastline around all the lakes!
The two biggest lakes in the area are Puulavesi and Kyyvesi. There are also other pretty lakes like Mallos and Synsiä. In 1997, a TV show in Finland even voted Kangasniemi the most beautiful municipality in the whole country!
Economy and Local Life
Kangasniemi has a lot of forests. These forests are a big part of the local economy. There are about 12,000,000 cubic metres (420,000,000 cu ft) of wood in these forests, and they grow about 500,000 m3 (18,000,000 cu ft) of new wood each year. This means forestry is an important industry here.
For fun, there's also a golf course called Puula golf field where people can play.
