Southern Savonia, also known as South Savo, is a beautiful region in the southeastern part of Finland. It's famous for being in the middle of the Finnish lake district. This means it has many lakes! The biggest lake in Finland, Lake Saimaa, is right here.
This region shares its borders with several other Finnish regions. These include Northern Savonia (North Savo), North Karelia, and Kymenlaakso. It also borders Päijät-Häme and Central Finland. Southern Savonia covers a large area of about 18,768 square kilometers (7,246 square miles). In 2011, about 153,738 people lived here. The two main towns in the region are Mikkeli and Savonlinna.
