Pertunmaa is a small town, also called a municipality, in Finland. It's located in a region called Southern Savonia. About 1,577 people live there as of 31 December 2023.
The town covers an area of 454.20 square kilometres (175.37 sq mi). A part of this area, 79.7 km2 (30.8 sq mi), is water. This means there are 4.21 inhabitants per square kilometre (10.9/sq mi) people per square kilometer. The main language spoken in Pertunmaa is Finnish.
Its neighbors are towns like Hartola, Heinola, Hirvensalmi, Mäntyharju, and Joutsa. Pertunmaa became its own independent town in 1926. Before that, it was part of Mäntyharju. An old wooden church from Hartola was moved to Pertunmaa and opened in 1927.
Because of money problems, Pertunmaa will join with Mäntyharju on January 1, 2025.

Culture and History
People say that Pertunmaa's culture is a mix of two different Finnish regions: Southern Savonia and Päijänne Tavastia. Even the local newspaper, Itä-Häme, which means "East Tavastia," is delivered here.
There's a story that Pertunmaa got its name from a man named Perttu. He supposedly ruled the whole area by himself a long time ago. The name "Pertunmaa" means "land of Perttu."
Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for Pertunmaa has a special meaning. It shows a golden flame on a red background with a black ear of grain. This design reminds us of how people used to farm long ago. They would clear land by burning forests, a method called slash-and-burn cultivation.
The artist Tapio Vallioja designed this coat of arms. The town council of Pertunmaa approved it on April 14, 1965. The Ministry of the Interior officially approved its use on July 1 of the same year.
Traditional Food
In the 1980s, two dishes were known as traditional foods from Pertunmaa. One was called Kisko, which is a type of blodpalt (a dish made with blood). The other was Rieska bread. This bread is made from rye flour, cream, and sour cream. It's special because it's baked using cabbage leaves.
Villages in Pertunmaa
The main village in Pertunmaa is called Pertunmaan kirkonkylä, which means "Pertunmaa church village." Another large and well-known village is Kuortti. These two are the biggest places where people live in the municipality.
There are also many smaller villages in Pertunmaa. These include Hartosenpää, Hölttä, Joutsjärvi, Karankamäki, Kuhajärvi, Kälkyttä, Lihavanpää, Mansikkamäki, Nipuli, and Ruorasmäki.
