Pertunmaa was a small town, or municipality, in Finland. It was located in a region called Southern Savonia. On January 1, 2025, Pertunmaa joined with a nearby town, Mäntyharju. So, Pertunmaa is now part of Mäntyharju.

Before the merger, Pertunmaa had about 1,541 people living there. It covered an area of 454.20 square kilometers (about 175.37 square miles). A large part of this area, 79.7 square kilometers (30.8 square miles), was water. The population density was about 4.12 people per square kilometer. The main language spoken in Pertunmaa was Finnish.

Pertunmaa became its own independent municipality in 1926. Before that, it was part of Mäntyharju. A historic wooden church from Hartola was moved to Pertunmaa and opened in 1927. Pertunmaa shared borders with several other municipalities. These included Hartola, Heinola, Hirvensalmi, Mäntyharju, and Joutsa.

The Name and Coat of Arms

There is a popular story about how Pertunmaa got its name. The legend says it was named after a man called Perttu. He was said to have ruled the entire area by himself a long time ago. The name "Pertunmaa" literally means "the land of Perttu."

The town's coat of arms has a special design. It shows a golden flame on a red background with a black plant ear. This design comes from old farming methods. In ancient times, people used "slash-and-burn" farming. This meant they would cut down trees and burn them to clear land for crops. The flame and the ear of grain represent this history. The coat of arms was designed by Tapio Vallioja. It was officially approved in 1965.
