Hirvensalmi is a small and peaceful municipality (a type of local government area) in Finland. It's located in the beautiful Southern Savonia region. This area is known for its many lakes and forests.
Hirvensalmi has a population of about 2,062 people (as of 31 December 2023). It covers an area of 746.59 square kilometres (288.26 sq mi). A big part of this area, about 281.2 km2 (108.6 sq mi), is water! The population density is 4.43 inhabitants per square kilometre (11.5/sq mi). The municipality was officially established in 1656.

About Hirvensalmi
Hirvensalmi is often called an "island municipality." This is because it has so many lakes and islands. Most people live on the mainland. However, some people do live on islands year-round.
Many islands are only used during the summer holidays. During this time, lots of holidaymakers come from Southern Finland. They love to enjoy the peace and nature. These visitors can even double the population of Hirvensalmi!
Where is Hirvensalmi?
Hirvensalmi is surrounded by other municipalities. Its neighbors are Joutsa, Kangasniemi, Mikkeli, Mäntyharju, and Pertunmaa.
Two large lakes help form the borders of Hirvensalmi. In the north, Puula lake separates Hirvensalmi from Kangasniemi. To the west, Suontee lake divides it from Joutsa.
