Kantoku facts for kids
Kantoku (寛徳) was a special time period in Japan's history, known as a Japanese era name (年号,, nengō). It came after the Chōkyū era and before the Eishō era. The Kantoku period lasted from November 1044 to April 1046. During this time, two emperors ruled Japan: Go-Suzaku-tennō (後朱雀天皇) and Go-Reizei-tennō (後冷泉天皇).

Key Events of the Kantoku Era
Emperor Go-Suzaku Steps Down
In 1045 (which was the second year of Kantoku), something important happened. On the 16th day of the first month, Emperor Go-Suzaku decided to step down from his role. This is called abdication.
A New Emperor Rises
On the very same day, Emperor Go-Suzaku's oldest son took over. This is known as receiving the succession (senso). Soon after, his role as the new monarch was officially confirmed. This happened through special ceremonies called sokui. He became Emperor Go-Reizei.
The Former Emperor Passes Away
Just two days later, on the 18th day of the first month in 1045, the former Emperor Go-Suzaku passed away. He was 37 years old.
