Kapasiwin (pronounced "kuh-PASS-ih-win") is a special kind of village in Alberta, Canada, called a summer village. It is located on the eastern shore of Wabamun Lake, which is a beautiful spot. You can find it south of Wabamun Lake Provincial Park and near the Yellowhead Highway. The name "Kapasiwin" comes from the Cree language word for "campground," which is fitting for a place near a lake! For a few years, from 1913 to 1918, it was known as the Village of Wabamun Beach.
A Look Back in Time
Kapasiwin has an interesting history. It first became an official village on October 25, 1913. Back then, it was called the Village of Wabamun Beach. This meant it had its own local government.
A few years later, on August 28, 1918, its name changed to the Village Municipality of Kepasiwin.
Later, people realized that this village was mostly used during the warmer months, like a vacation spot. So, on September 1, 1993, the Province of Alberta officially changed its status. It became the Summer Village of Kapasiwin, which is what it is called today. This type of village is usually for people who visit during the summer.
Who Lives Here?
Every few years, Canada counts its population in something called a census. This helps us learn how many people live in different places.
In the 2021 Canadian census, the Summer Village of Kapasiwin had 24 people living there. They lived in 16 of the 46 available homes. This was a big change from 2016, when only 10 people lived there!
The village covers a small area of about 0.33 square kilometers (0.13 square miles). In 2021, this meant there were about 73.7 people living in each square kilometer.
In the Canada 2016 Census, Kapasiwin had 10 people living in 5 of its 41 homes. This number was the same as in 2011. The village's land area was about 0.3 square kilometers (0.12 square miles) in 2016.
