Kara Edwards' Early Career in Radio
Kara Edwards started her career in broadcasting right after high school. She got a job at Radio Disney in Dallas, Texas. She worked there as an intern for about eight months. After that, she got more permanent jobs as a writer, producer, voice actress, and even a director for children's voices.
Becoming a Radio Show Host
In July 1997, Kara became a co-host for the Squeege and Kara Show. This show was broadcast on Radio Disney and she hosted it with her friend and fellow voice actor, Kyle Hebert.
Kara also did voice-over work for commercials. She voiced ads for big companies like Blockbuster, Levi Strauss & Co., and Clinique.
Moving into Anime Voice Acting
While working at Radio Disney, Kara Edwards also started voicing characters in English versions of Japanese anime series for Funimation. Her most famous voice roles are the child version of Goten and Videl in the popular show Dragon Ball Z.
In March 2002, Kara moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. She was hired as a producer and sometimes a "sidekick" for the Sander Walker in the Morning radio show on WSSS 104.7 FM.
Changes in Radio Shows
Kara worked at WSSS until October 31, 2003. After that morning's show, the entire team was told that the radio station was changing its music format to Christmas songs all day. Everyone on the show was let go.
But Kara didn't stay off the air for long! In February 2004, she became the co-host of the Jeff Roper Morning Show. This show was broadcast from WSOC 103.7 FM, also in Charlotte.
In January 2005, Jeff Roper left WSOC. Kara then became a co-host with Rob Tanner for a new show called Tanner in the Morning. This show was very popular in the Charlotte area for its mix of local humor and funny parodies. Kara continued to co-host this show for almost two years.
Focusing on Voice Acting
Even though Kara enjoyed her radio work, she started to feel a strong passion for voice acting. In August 2006, Kara and other voice actors like Sean Schemmel, Christopher Sabat, and Jason Liebrecht went to a big event called the Wizard World Comics Convention in Chicago, Illinois.
At this event, Dragon Ball fans waited in line for up to five hours just to get Kara's autograph. This made Kara seriously think about making voice acting her full-time job.
"I decided then, you know what? This is my passion in life. I always thought radio was the place I should be and pursued it and pursued it. Now I think this is the place I should be."
A few weeks later, Kara told the WSOC management that she wanted to leave her radio job to become a full-time voice actress. WSOC and the Tanner show staff understood her decision, and she left on good terms.
Since then, Kara Edwards has lived in Dallas. She does voice-over work for commercials and documentaries. She also often returns to Funimation to voice her Dragon Ball characters and other anime roles.
