Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Japanese: ドラゴンボールZ 神と神, Hepburn: Doragon Bōru Zetto: Kami to Kami, lit. "Dragon Ball Z: God and God") is a 2013 Japanese animated science fantasy martial arts film. It is the eighteenth movie based on the Dragon Ball series. It is also the fourteenth movie to have the Dragon Ball Z name. The film was released in theaters on March 30, 2013.
This movie was the first Dragon Ball film to be shown in cinemas in 17 years. The last one was the tenth anniversary movie in 1996. It was also the first Dragon Ball movie to use digital animation. Unlike older Dragon Ball movies, this was a full-length film released on its own. It was not part of a special movie event.
Battle of Gods was the first Japanese film ever shown in IMAX Digital Theaters. It was released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 13, 2013. Funimation released the movie in North America in August 2014. Madman Entertainment released it in Australia and New Zealand. Manga Entertainment released the film in the United Kingdom in November 2014.
Battle of Gods is important because it is the first film considered an official part of the Dragon Ball story. It takes place during a time gap in the original manga. The original creator, Akira Toriyama, was very involved in making the movie. The story is about Beerus, the God of Destruction. He learns that the evil Frieza was defeated by Goku. Beerus wants to find a strong opponent. So, he and his friend Whis travel to Earth to challenge Goku to a battle.
Later, the story of Battle of Gods was used as the first part of the Dragon Ball Super TV show. This show expanded on the movie's plot.

Plot Summary
Beerus Wakes Up
Beerus, the powerful God of Destruction, wakes up after a very long sleep. His helper, Whis, tells him what has been happening in the universe. Beerus is surprised to hear that the evil Frieza was defeated by a Saiyan named Goku. He remembers a prophecy from 39 years ago. The Oracle Fish said that a mighty fighter called the Super Saiyan God would appear.
Goku's First Fight
Beerus is curious about this challenge. He finds Goku on King Kai's planet. Goku is excited and challenges Beerus to a fight. Even when Goku turns into Super Saiyan 3, Beerus easily defeats him. Beerus is not impressed and leaves to find the other Saiyans.
Party Crashers
On Earth, Bulma is having a birthday party. Beerus arrives and interrupts the fun. Vegeta knows how powerful Beerus is. He tries to keep Beerus happy, and Beerus and Whis enjoy Earth's food. During the party, the Pilaf Gang tries to steal the magical Dragon Balls but fails. Also, everyone finds out that Videl is going to have Gohan's baby.
Beerus Gets Angry
The party continues, but Beerus gets upset when Mr. Buu refuses to share his pudding. Beerus attacks Buu. He then decides to destroy Earth when Android 18, Tien Shinhan, Piccolo, and Gohan try to fight him. They are all quickly defeated. Vegeta tries to fight Beerus, and even Goten and Trunks (who fuse into Gotenks) are beaten. Bulma gets angry that Beerus is ruining her party and slaps him. When Beerus hits her back, Vegeta gets very angry. He fights Beerus harder than anyone else so far, but he is still defeated.
The Super Saiyan God
As Beerus gets ready to destroy the planet, Goku arrives. He asks Beerus for more time to learn about the Super Saiyan God. Goku uses the Dragon Balls to summon Shenron. The dragon explains that they need the power of six pure-hearted Saiyans for one of them to become a Super Saiyan God.
Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, Goten, and even Videl's unborn child combine their energy. This allows Goku to transform into the Super Saiyan God.
Goku vs. Beerus
Goku faces Beerus, and they have an intense battle. The Super Saiyan God form gives Goku amazing power. He eventually changes back to his regular Super Saiyan form because the Super Saiyan God form has a time limit. However, Goku keeps some of the godlike power in his fight. Beerus decides to use a huge energy attack to test Goku. Goku struggles to stop the attack. He thinks about his friends and family, which gives him strength. He briefly turns into a Super Saiyan God again and absorbs the attack.
Earth is Spared
Goku is very tired and admits defeat. Beerus is impressed by Goku's effort. He says Goku is the second strongest person he has ever fought, after Whis. Whis is Beerus's martial arts teacher and is even stronger than Beerus. Goku also learns that there are other universes with other Gods of Destruction. Beerus decides to spare Earth. He only destroys a small rock, keeping his word in a way. Beerus and Whis then leave to go back home.
