Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Karakudamono (Japanese: 唐菓子) is a special Japanese name for different kinds of pastries and sweets that originally came from China. In Chinese, these sweets were called Tangguozi. They were brought to Japan a long time ago by people who traveled to China, like important envoys (representatives) from Japan. These Chinese-style pastries were also known as togashi.

What are Karakudamono?

Karakudamono are a group of traditional Japanese sweets that have their roots in ancient Chinese recipes. They are not just any sweets; they are a part of Japan's rich history and culture.

How Karakudamono Came to Japan

These delicious pastries were first introduced to Japan during a time when Japanese envoys made important trips to Tang China. These envoys were like ambassadors, and they brought back many new ideas and items, including these unique sweets.

Once in Japan, karakudamono became very important. They were often used as special offerings at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. This shows how much they were valued. Later, during the Heian period (which was from 794 to 1185), these pastries became a key part of big feasts and banquets held by the Japanese aristocracy (the noble families).

A Special Pastry: Modaka

One of the very first karakudamono to arrive in Japan was a pastry called modaka. This sweet actually came from India originally, but it traveled through China to reach Japan. In Chinese, it was known as "balls of joy" (huanxituan).

The name modaka even appears in a Japanese dictionary from the early 900s, showing how long it has been a part of Japanese culture.

Modaka Today

Today, you can still find a version of this pastry in Kyoto, where it is called seijo̅ kankidan. It's amazing that a sweet from so long ago is still enjoyed!

Traditional modaka are also prepared using old methods at Shinto shrines across Japan. You can find them at places like Kamigamo Jinja in Kyoto, Kasuga Taisha in Nara, and Nichieda Jinja in Shiga Prefecture.

Karakudamono in Famous Stories

Karakudamono are even mentioned in famous Japanese literature. They appear in The Tale of Genji, which is one of the world's oldest and most famous novels. This shows just how important and well-known these sweets were in ancient Japan.
