Kari Skogland's journey in the film world didn't start with directing. Her first job was as a film editor, where she helped put movie scenes together. After that, she began directing commercials and music videos, winning awards for her work.
Moving into Television
Soon, Skogland started directing television shows. One of her first was an episode of Dead at 21 in 1994. She later directed five episodes of the Canadian show Traders. This show was a big success and was nominated for several Gemini Awards, which are like the Canadian version of the Emmys. Skogland herself was nominated for Best Director.

- Boardwalk Empire

Speaking Up for Women Directors
Kari Skogland has talked about the challenges women face in the film industry. She mentioned the "glass ceiling," which is an invisible barrier that can make it harder for women to get top jobs like directing.
In 2018, she said, "People say they can’t find female directors, but the reason for that is there’s no access, no entry point. They don’t appear overnight—you have to create a space where they can grow and be discovered." She believes in creating more opportunities for women to succeed in filmmaking.
