Karim Ouellet (born December 8, 1984 – died November 15, 2021) was a talented pop singer and songwriter from Canada. He was born in Senegal. Karim released several albums between 2011 and 2016. His second album, Fox, even won a big award called a Juno Award in 2014.

Growing Up: Karim's Early Life

Karim Ouellet was born in Dakar, Senegal, on December 8, 1984. When he was just one year old, he was adopted by Canadian diplomats. This meant he lived in different countries like France, Rwanda, and Tunisia. When he was 15, his family moved back to Quebec City, Canada.

From a young age, Karim loved music. He learned to play the piano, percussion, and guitar. He even said he wrote his first song when he was only seven! As a teenager, he started playing electric guitar and joined local bands. Around 2005, he met Claude Bégin, who helped him write songs for his first three albums.

Karim's Music Career

Karim Ouellet released his first album, Plume, in 2011. That same year, he came in second place in a music competition called Francouvertes. He then went on many tours and performed at big music festivals. These included Francofolies de La Rochelle, Osheaga, and SXSW.

His second album, Fox, came out in November 2012. This album was very popular! In 2013, he received three nominations at the Félix Awards. These included awards for Best Male Singer and Pop Album of the Year. He was also named the best new artist by Radio-Canada that year. The album Fox went on to win the Juno Award for Francophone Album of the Year in 2014. This is a major award for French-language music in Canada.

Karim's third album, Trente, was released in March 2016. Later that year, he also released Aikido, a mini-album that fans could download for free.

Karim's music style was a mix of folk and pop. You could also hear influences from reggae and African music in his songs. He often worked with hip hop groups too, like CEA and Movèzerbe.

About Karim's Life

Karim Ouellet's sister, Sarahmée, is also a musician. In 2018, Karim was chosen to be the French-language spokesperson for Black History Month in Canada.

Karim Ouellet passed away on November 15, 2021. His body was found later, on January 17, 2022, at a studio in Quebec City. Police confirmed there was no foul play involved. An investigation found that he died from a serious health condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. At the time of his death, he was reportedly working on his fourth album.
