Karina Pankievich is a leading activist for trans rights in Uruguay.

Karina Pankievich is a well-known activist from Uruguay who fights for the rights of transgender people. An activist is someone who works hard to bring about political or social change. Karina is the president of a group called the Trans Association of Uruguay (ATRU).

Early Life and Activism

When Karina was 13 years old, she moved to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. At that time, Uruguay was under a dictatorship, which meant the government had strict control and people had very few freedoms. Life was very difficult, especially for transgender people.

Because of the challenges and unfair treatment she experienced, Karina left Uruguay for a while. She lived in Brazil and Argentina. She returned to Uruguay in 1985. Back home, she saw that many people in the LGBTI community wanted to stand up for their human rights but were scared to speak out.

This inspired Karina to take action. In 1985, she and other activists, like Gloria Álvez Mariño, started the Trans Association of Uruguay, also known as ATRU.

Working for Change

The Trans Association of Uruguay (ATRU)

ATRU became an important organization for transgender people in Uruguay. Its main goal is to support and train people to become activists themselves. The group helps them learn how to promote and protect their rights.

ATRU has grown into a network of groups that work across Uruguay and even in other countries in South America.

One of the group's biggest achievements is the Diversity March. This is a yearly event that celebrates the LGBTI community in Uruguay. It has become very popular, and in 2019, more than 130,000 people joined the march.

Protecting Rights

Karina also took part in a project to create a documentary. The film was made to show the difficulties and unfair treatment that transgender women faced in Uruguay in 2017.

Thanks to the hard work of activists like Karina, the trans community in Uruguay achieved a major victory in 2018. A new law was passed that helps protect their rights. In 2019, some politicians tried to get rid of this law, but activists worked to keep it in place.
