Life and Work

Karl Abraham von Zedlitz was born on January 4, 1731. His birthplace was Schwarzwaldau in Silesia, which is now part of Poland.

After finishing his studies at the Military Academy in Brandenburg an der Havel, he started working for the government. In 1755, he became a clerk in a court called the Chamber Court.

Rising in Government

Zedlitz continued to advance in his career. In 1759, he moved to a position in the Oberamt Government in Breslau. This was another important government office.

By 1764, he became the president of the Government of Silesia. This meant he was in charge of the region's administration. In 1770, he was promoted again to Secretary of State and Minister of Justice. He was responsible for legal matters in Prussia.

In 1771, he took on even more duties. He oversaw the criminal department and was in charge of the entire spiritual department. This department handled matters related to churches and schools. He also managed school supplies. For a short time, from late 1770 to early 1771, he led the Prussian Supreme Tribunal, which was a very high court.

Promoting Education

Karl Abraham von Zedlitz believed strongly in education. He was a follower of the famous philosopher Immanuel Kant. Zedlitz worked to improve schools and encourage free thinking, especially in higher education.

Kant's important book, Critique of Pure Reason, published in 1781, was dedicated to Zedlitz. This was a common practice back then to honor important supporters.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1788, Zedlitz's role changed. He lost control of the spiritual department, which included schools. Another official, Johann Christoph von Wollner, took over these duties. Because of this change, Zedlitz decided to leave government service.

After resigning, he became the director of the Knight's Academy in Liegnitz in 1788 and 1789. He passed away on March 18, 1793, at his home in Kapsdorf. He is remembered for his vital role in making education available to more people in Prussia.
