Brandenburg an der Havel is an old town in the state of Brandenburg, Germany. It sits right on the Havel river. About 74,000 people lived there in 2005.
You might know the state of Brandenburg more than the town. But actually, the state got its name from this very town! Long ago, the town of Brandenburg was the starting point for important areas like the Margravate of Brandenburg, which was a powerful region. Today, it's a smaller town compared to nearby Berlin. But it was once very important in the history of Brandenburg and Prussia.

History of Brandenburg an der Havel
For a long time, Brandenburg an der Havel was split into two parts. One part was on the west side of the Havel river. The other part was on the east side. People even thought of them as two different towns, called Old Brandenburg and New Brandenburg, for many centuries.
Joining the Hanseatic League
In 1314, both parts of the town became members of the Hanseatic League. This was a strong group of trading cities in Northern Europe. Being part of it helped the town become richer and more important.
Challenges and Changes
The town faced tough times during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). It was badly damaged and many things were lost. After the war, the main government moved to Potsdam. This meant the town of Brandenburg was no longer the capital. In 1715, the two halves of the town finally joined together to become one single town.
Modern Times
During the time of Nazi Germany, a prison called Brandenburg-Görden was located in a part of the town called Görden. After the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, many young people moved away from Brandenburg an der Havel. This caused the town's population to drop.
