A Long History
Early Churches and Fires
Imagine a church standing in Karlstad way back in the 1300s! That's how long there has been a church on this spot. Sadly, that first church burned down in 1616. Almost the entire city was destroyed in that fire.
After the fire, a new church was built. Karlstad became a cathedral in 1647. This happened when Queen Christina decided to create the Diocese of Karlstad. But, just like the first one, this church also burned down in 1719.
Building the Current Cathedral
A brand new church was built between 1723 and 1730. It was placed on Lagberget on Tingvalla Island. A person named Johannes Steuchius helped lead the building project. He later became an Archbishop.
The church was built in a style called Baroque. It was officially opened on July 13, 1730.
Changes and Restorations
Over the years, the cathedral has seen many changes. In 1790, an architect named Erik Palmstedt designed a new look for the inside of the choir. This included a new altar and pulpit.
Another big fire hit Karlstad on July 2, 1865. This fire destroyed almost the entire city. The roof and tower of Karlstad Cathedral were also badly damaged. After this fire, the tower was rebuilt. It got its current look from drawings by architect Albert Törnqvist. The inside of the church was fixed up in the late 1870s.
The cathedral was also restored in 1915–1916. Later, in 1956–1957, a new large room called a sacristy was added to the east side. More restoration work happened in 1965–1967. The cathedral was last renovated in 1998 to keep it looking great.
