Karol Aída Cariola Oliva (born April 1, 1987) is a Chilean politician. A politician is someone who works in government. She was once the leader of the student federation at the University of Concepción in 2010.
In 2011, she became the General Secretary of the Juventudes Comunistas de Chile (Communist Youth of Chile). This is the youth group of the Communist Party of Chile. Karol Cariola was the second woman ever to hold this important position.
In 2013, she ran for a seat in the Chilean Congress. She won the primary elections for her area, which included Recoleta and Independencia. Later, in the main election on November 17, 2013, she won with 38.47% of the votes. This made her a deputy, which is like a representative, for the 19th district of Santiago. She started her four-year term in the Chilean Congress on March 11, 2014.
In December 2021, members of the Communist Party of Chile chose her to join their main leadership group, called the central committee. On March 11, 2022, it was decided that she would become the Speaker of the Chilean Chamber of Deputies. She took on this role on April 15, 2024.

Student Voice: Fighting for Education
Karol Cariola became the General Secretary of the Communist Youth during a huge student movement in Chile. This movement is often called the "Chilean Winter." From April 2011 until the end of the school year, students across Chile refused to go to school or university. They were protesting and demanding an end to the privatization of education. This means they wanted education to be free and public, not run by private companies.
Cariola said that these student protests and strikes were about politics and making big changes. She disagreed with the Chilean government's idea that the student groups were controlled by extreme people.
In an interview, Cariola explained how important the student movement was. She said:
"I think our country is at a historic moment, that it is necessary to generate structural changes….We have had a process that has led this country to develop a new consciousness. Chile today is not the same that it was 6 months ago, there is an eagerness to generate changes and the need to do so."
Becoming a Parliament Member
Karol Cariola believes that Chile needs a new constitution. A constitution is a set of rules that a country is governed by. She wanted to work for a special group, called a Constituent Assembly, to create this new constitution. She felt the old Chilean Constitution was not fair because it was made during a time when Chile was not a democracy.
Cariola also said that if she became a deputy, she would work to create fair labour laws. These laws protect workers' rights. She also wanted to make it easier for all workers to join a trade union. A union is a group that helps workers get better pay and working conditions.
Winning Primary Elections
On August 4, 2013, the "New Majority" group held primary elections. These elections helped decide which candidates would run for the main Chilean elections in November 2013. In her area, Recoleta-Independencia, Karol Cariola received the most votes from local people. This showed she had strong support.
Chilean General Elections 2013
In the 2013 Chilean general election, Karol Cariola ran to become a deputy for the 19th district of Santiago. This district included Recoleta and Independencia. She won the election with 38.47% of the votes, becoming a deputy.
Chilean General Elections 2017
In the 2017 Chilean general election, Karol Cariola ran again for deputy. This time, it was for the 9th electoral district, which included many areas like Recoleta, Independencia, and Renca. She was re-elected with 14.95% of the votes.
Leading the Chamber of Deputies
On March 11, 2022, a group of eleven political parties and independent politicians agreed that Karol Cariola would become the President of the Chilean Chamber of Deputies. This is a very important leadership role in the Chilean government. She officially took on this role on April 15, 2024.
