Kate Collins was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She grew up in Washington D.C.. Her father is Michael Collins, a famous astronaut. He was the pilot for the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. This was the first time humans landed on the Moon. Her mother's name is Patricia Collins.

Kate went to National Cathedral School. After that, she studied theater at Northwestern University. She finished her studies in 1981.
