Katherine Henderson's Early Life and Performances
Katherine Henderson grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. She had famous relatives in the music world: her aunt was Eva Taylor, and her uncle was Clarence Williams, a well-known musician.
When she was a child, Katherine performed in special kinds of shows. These included "minstrel shows," which were popular stage performances, and "vaudeville" shows, which featured many different acts like singing, dancing, and comedy.
Recording Her Music
In the late 1920s, Katherine Henderson recorded about ten songs. These songs were released by record companies called Brunswick Records and QRS Records.
In 1927, she was part of a stage musical called Bottomland. Her uncle, Clarence Williams, wrote this show. One of the songs from Bottomland was "Take Your Black Bottom Dance Outside," which Katherine recorded. In 1928, she married John Jackson.
Katherine Henderson continued to perform live until 1944, even after she stopped making new recordings. She was not related to other famous musicians named Henderson, like Fletcher Henderson, Horace Henderson, Edmonia Henderson, or Rosa Henderson.
