Kathleen Marescaux (born Kathleen Louisa Rose Dennis, July 3, 1868 – April 14, 1944) was a talented Irish artist. She was especially known for her beautiful paintings of plants and flowers, called botanical subjects, and peaceful countryside scenes.
Her Early Life
Kathleen Louisa Rose Dennis was born in Kilkenny, Ireland. Her father, James Benjamin Dennis, was a military officer. Her mother, Emma Salmon Dennis, was born in India into an English military family.
Her Art and Exhibitions
Kathleen Marescaux was best known for painting plants and flowers, as well as rural landscapes. She first showed her artwork at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1893. She continued to exhibit there until 1935.
Her paintings were also displayed in other places. These included the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne, England. She also showed her work with the Dublin Sketching Club and the Fine Art Society in London. Her art was also seen at the Ulster Academy of Arts.
Her Personal Life
In 1894, Kathleen Dennis married Gerald Charles Adolphe Marescaux. He was a Royal Navy officer from London who later became a Vice-Admiral. They were married at St Canice's Cathedral in Kilkenny.
Kathleen and Gerald had two sons: Geoffrey (born 1901) and Laurence (born 1903). Kathleen Marescaux became a widow in 1920. She passed away in 1944 in Kilkenny when she was 75 years old.
Today, you can find some of her personal papers at the National Library of Ireland. There is also a collection of her family's papers there.
In 2009, Kilkenny celebrated its 400th anniversary as a city. The Butler Gallery held an art show called "Kilkenny: An Artists Celebration." This exhibition featured many artists from Kilkenny, including Kathleen Marescaux.
