Katie Archibald, born on March 12, 1994, is a top British cyclist. She is known for her amazing skills in endurance track cycling. Katie races for both Great Britain and Scotland.

She is an Olympic champion, winning gold in the team pursuit at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also won a silver medal in the same event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. At the 2020 Tokyo Games, she earned her second Olympic gold medal in the new women's Madison race with her teammate, Laura Kenny.

Katie has also won many titles at the World Championships and European Championships. She holds the record for the most gold medals (20!) at the European elite track championships. She also holds the British national record for the individual pursuit.

Early Life and Starting Cycling

Katie Archibald went to school at The Glasgow Academy. She used to be a swimmer before she started cycling. She began cycling competitively a bit later than some, starting on grass tracks in 2011 and hard tracks in 2012.

After working for her family's business, she joined British Cycling's Olympic Development Academy in November 2013. This was a big step towards becoming a professional cyclist.

Track Cycling Success

Katie made her debut for Great Britain at the 2013 European Track Championships. She and her teammates, Laura Trott, Dani King, and Elinor Barker, won a gold medal. They even broke the world record twice in the team pursuit event.

At the Track World Cup in Manchester, Katie won a silver medal in the scratch race and a bronze in the points race. Later, in Aguascalientes, she helped the Great Britain team win gold and break the world record again in the team pursuit.

Katie became Scotland's first female track cycling world champion in 2014. She was part of the team that won the team pursuit title at the World Track Championships. She also won gold medals in the team pursuit and individual pursuit at the 2014 European Track Championships. She later won the Madison event at the World Cup in Glasgow with Manon Lloyd. However, she broke her wrist in a fall during the race. After recovering, Katie won four titles at the national championships. She then won her first individual world title in the Omnium.

She also won the first-ever gold medal in the Women's Madison with Laura Kenny. In October 2021, Katie won her 15th and 16th gold medals at the European Track cycling championships. This made her the most successful rider ever in elite European events.

In June 2024, Katie had to withdraw from the upcoming Paris Olympics. She broke two bones in her leg and tore ligaments in a "freak accident" at home. She plans to return to racing in October at the 2024 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Denmark.
