Kavita Ramanan is a brilliant mathematician and professor. She studies something called probability theory and applied mathematics. She teaches at Brown University in the United States.

Education and Career

Kavita Ramanan was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Her father, S. Ramanan, was also a mathematician.

She went to the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. In 1992, she earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.

Then, she moved to Brown University. She completed her Ph.D. in applied mathematics there in 1996. Her main project, called a dissertation, was about how to understand and predict patterns in communication networks.

After her studies, she worked at Bell Labs from 1997 to 2002. Later, she became a professor at Carnegie Mellon University from 2002 to 2009. In 2010, she returned to Brown University as a faculty member.

Recognition and Awards

Kavita Ramanan has received many important awards for her work. These awards show how much her contributions are valued in mathematics.

  • In 2006, she won the Erlang Prize. This award is given by the Applied Probability Society.
  • She was chosen as a special member, called a fellow, of several important groups. These include the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (in 2013) and the American Mathematical Society (in 2018).
  • She also became a fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.
  • In 2015, she gave a special talk called the Medallion lecture. She spoke about how large networks behave.
  • In 2019, she was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
  • In 2020, she became a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. This was for her work on how things change and move in complex systems.
  • She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2020. This is a very respected award for people doing important research.
  • In 2021, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This group honors leaders in many fields.
  • She also received a Distinguished Research Achievement Award from Brown University in 2021.
  • The Department of Defense named her a Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellow in 2021.
  • From January to June 2022, she was a Senior Scholar at the Clay Mathematics Institute.
