Kavita Ramanan is a brilliant mathematician. She studies probability theory, which is about understanding chance and how likely things are to happen. She is a professor of applied mathematics at Brown University. Applied mathematics uses math to solve real-world problems.

Early Life and Learning

Kavita Ramanan was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Her father, S. Ramanan, was also a mathematician.

Her College Journey

In 1992, Kavita finished her first degree at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. She studied chemical engineering there. This field uses science and math to design processes that change chemicals.

She then moved to the United States. In 1996, she earned her PhD in applied mathematics from Brown University. A PhD is the highest university degree. It means you have done a lot of original research. Her main teacher for her PhD was Paul Dupuis. For her PhD, she wrote a very important research paper.

Where She Has Worked

After her PhD, Kavita did more research at the Technion in Israel. From 1997 to 2002, she worked at Bell Labs. This is a famous research company.

Later, she became a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. She taught there from 2002 to 2009. In 2010, she returned to Brown University as a professor. She has been teaching and doing research there ever since.

Awards and Honors

Kavita Ramanan has received many important awards for her work. These awards show that she is a leading expert in her field.
