Kazunari Okayama (岡山 一成, Okayama Kazunari, born April 24, 1978) is a former Japanese football player. He was also known by his Korean name, Kang Il-Sung. Kazunari played in different positions during his career, including defender and forward.

Playing Career Highlights

Kazunari Okayama was born in Sakai, Japan, on April 24, 1978. After finishing high school, he started his professional football journey in 1997. He joined Yokohama F. Marinos, a club in Japan's top league, the J1 League.

Early Days as a Forward

Kazunari made an exciting start to his career. On September 6, 1997, he played his first game as a forward for Yokohama Marinos. He even scored a goal in that match against Sanfrecce Hiroshima! He continued this amazing streak by scoring in his next two games as well.

However, after this strong start, he did not play as much in 1998. In June 1999, he moved to Omiya Ardija, a club in the J2 League (Japan's second division).

Switching Positions

In 2000, Kazunari returned to Yokohama F. Marinos. This time, he changed his playing position. He became a center back, which is a defensive player who helps protect the goal. He played many games in this new role.

In 2001, he joined Cerezo Osaka and played mostly as a forward again. The next year, in 2002, he moved to Kawasaki Frontale in the J2 League. Here, he became a regular player as a right defender. He played many matches in 2003 but did not start as often in 2004.

Promotions and New Teams

In 2005, Kazunari moved to Avispa Fukuoka. He played many games as a center back. His team did very well that year and was promoted to the J1 League at the end of the 2005 season.

Even though his team was promoted, he moved to another J2 club, Kashiwa Reysol, in 2006. He continued to play as a center back, and once again, his team was promoted to the J1 League for the 2007 season.

Later in 2007, he moved to Vegalta Sendai, another J2 club. He was a regular center back for them for two seasons.

Playing in South Korea

After a short break from playing, Kazunari moved to South Korea in July 2009. He joined Pohang Steelers, a well-known club there. He played for them for two seasons before returning to Japan at the end of 2010.

Final Years in Japan

After another short break, Kazunari joined Consadole Sapporo in June 2011. He did not play many games there and left the club at the end of 2012.

In August 2013, he joined Nara Club, a team in the Japanese Regional Leagues. His team was promoted to the Japan Football League in 2015. Kazunari Okayama officially retired from playing football at the end of the 2017 season.
