Discovering Kearny's Past: The Kearny Museum
The Kearny Museum is a history museum located on the top floor of the main library. It shows off local displays about the town of Kearny. The museum's collection includes many interesting things. You can see old photographs, different types of clothing, and items from wars that relate to Kearny's history.
Honoring Philip Kearny Jr.
A special part of the museum focuses on Major General Philip Kearny Jr. He was a hero in the American Civil War. The town of Kearny is actually named after him! The museum has furniture from his home, Belle Grove. These items were given to the museum by his granddaughter and second wife.
Exploring Local History
The museum also has a complete collection of Kearny High School yearbooks. This is a great way to look back at past students and school life. There's also a collection of old clothes and accessories. These items show what life was like in Kearny between 1850 and 1960. Many of these items were donated or loaned by people who live in the town.
Museum Volunteers and Hours
Volunteers help run the museum. They organize and set up all the displays. The museum is open on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. On Saturdays, you can visit from 10 a.m. to noon. Please note that the museum closes during the summer months of July and August.
