About the Kearny Public Library
The Kearny Public Library has a huge collection of almost 77,000 items, including books, magazines, and more. It serves nearly 46,000 people in Kearny. Every year, people borrow over 79,000 items from the library!
The main library building is special because it's one of New Jersey's Carnegie libraries. This means it was built with money donated by Andrew Carnegie, a famous businessman. He helped build thousands of libraries so that everyone could learn and read. The Kearny Public Library was established in 1907.
Discover the Kearny Museum
Right upstairs from the main library, you'll find the Kearny Museum. This museum is a history museum that shows off local displays about the town of Kearny. It's a great place to learn about the past!
The museum has many interesting things. You can see old photographs, articles of clothing, and even war memorabilia from Kearny's history. A special part of the museum focuses on Civil War hero Major General Philip Kearny Jr. The town of Kearny is named after him! You can even see furniture from his old home, Belle Grove, which was donated by his granddaughter and second wife.
The Kearny Museum also has a full collection of Kearny High School yearbooks. It's fun to look through them and see how students and school life have changed over the years. There's also a collection of antique clothes and accessories. These items show what life was like in Kearny between 1850 and 1960. They were donated or loaned by people who live in town.
The museum is run by amazing volunteers who help set up and arrange all the displays. You can visit the museum on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Just remember, the museum is closed during the summer months of July and August.
