The Herzog Family's History
The Herzog family first had a winery in a country called Czechoslovakia. This winery was very special. It was the only wine supplier to Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. The emperor even gave Philip Herzog (who lived from 1843 to 1918) a special title, baron.
While some wines for the emperor might not have been kosher, all other wines were made according to strict kosher rules. This meant they followed specific Jewish laws for food preparation.
Moving to the United States
During World War II, the Herzog family's winery was taken over by the Nazis. The Herzogs had to hide to stay safe. After a big change in Czechoslovakia in 1948, they moved to the United States.
Eugene Herzog, who was Philip's grandson, started working for the Royal Wine Corporation in New York City. Part of his pay was given to him in company shares. By 1958, he owned most of the company. He then bought the company and started calling it Kedem. Today, Mordechai Herzog is the CEO of Royal Wine Corporation.
Kedem wines are part of the Royal Wine Corporation. This company is the biggest importer of Israeli wines and spirits in the U.S. Royal Wine Corporation is owned by KayCo. KayCo is the largest company that distributes kosher food.
