Keevil Daly (born December 21, 1923 – died June 28, 2011) was a very strong athlete. He was a weightlifter from British Guiana and later Canada. He competed in big international events.
Who Was Keevil Daly?
Keevil Daly was born in Georgetown, which was then called British Guiana. He grew up to be a talented weightlifter. He competed in the "light heavyweight" and "middle heavyweight" categories. This means he lifted weights in specific weight ranges.
A Champion Weightlifter
Keevil Daly won a silver medal at the 1947 World Weightlifting Championships. This was a huge competition for weightlifters from all over the world. He competed in the 82.5 kg category. Later, he won a gold medal for Canada. This was at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver. He won in the 90 kg category.
Surviving World War II
Before he became famous for weightlifting, Keevil Daly had a very dangerous job. He worked as a merchant marine during World War II. Merchant marines are sailors who transport goods on ships. His ship, the Canadian SS Lady Nelson, was attacked by a torpedo. Luckily, he survived this attack.
Life After the War
After the war ended, Keevil Daly made history again. He became the first black person to graduate from Ryerson Polytechnical. He studied there while serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. This was a big achievement for him and for others.
